steampunk circlet [Nov. 7th, 2009|09:47 pm]

This circlet is made of brass, silver and Swarovski Heliotrope crystal.

What makes it steampunk? If you look closely there are small screws in among the crystals. For me steampunk is the blending of Victorian aesthetics with practical, mechanical, industrial and vintage sci-fi elements., as such this qualifies in my book.

thursdries [Oct. 8th, 2009|09:14 pm]
I finally sort of have a site for my Steampunk stuff up.

Obviously I am still working on it. There isn't that much there yet, and it will take a while to put what I consider to be my best pieces up, plus I need to go through my bookmarks for the links page. I also need to add a section or two, somehow, considering the menu is full. Meh. I am hoping to have it done-ish by the con but who knows. I have a lot of sewing and such to do still.

Wood & Brass Goggles [Oct. 6th, 2009|12:39 am]
I was not satisfied with my husband's previous goggles which were just a mod I did of the ubiquitous Restoration Hardware German goggles so I made him a new pair. They are based off wood rings. The other materials used are metal and leather. The left eye has a lens from an old pair of glasses so other than needing to trigger the left he can actually see out of them.

to quote the governator "twwwwoooo weeeeeeekssssssssss" [Oct. 5th, 2009|09:30 pm]
I have two weeks to get everything finished for steamcon. The wings are done save for one detail that I am waiting to arrive in the mail. Blurry teaser pic with the wings detached for transport:

Better pictures once the last bit arrives.

Erick's new goggles are almost finished. I decided that his old ones which were mods of the German goggles from Restoration Hardware just weren't good enough anymore. The new ones are all wood, metal, leather and exclusive of decoration handmade.

The only other things I HAVE to do before the con are take in some clothes and sew one or two things for Erick. I'm sure another last min. project will sneak in there somehow but for now this look doable. It would be so nice to be done early with stuff so I can just kind of relax before the event.

That's totally going to happen. Yeah, and I'm a Chinese jet pilot.

Xevian Industries presents the Xevian 9 - Elegant Assassin [Sep. 30th, 2009|05:34 pm]

The Xevian 9 was designed to easily and completely break down into small discreet parts so that it might be brought into situations where weapons are prohibited. Easy and quick reassembly along with surprising power make this weapon an excellent choice for anyone needing stealth, power and aesthetic refinement. Powered by a rechargeable, and replaceable crystal the Xevian 9 shoots an accurate and deadly ray. Shown here with the optional backup crystal hanging from a chain that may be worn around the neck for convenience, a beautiful and practical way to ensure you are always ready no matter what the situation.

This gun is made entirely out of lamp and plumbing parts. It screws together and can be completely taken apart as nothing is glued or soldered. The original concept was to make a gun from found and unaltered parts and that is what it is.

[Sep. 21st, 2009|07:25 am]
Working on projects for Steamcon. The big ones are:

Bat wings for me. They won't be articulated as I had originally planned, but I think they will look nifty. Slightly smaller than my demon wings and attached to a backpacky sort of thing I made out of the guts of a defunct grandfather clock and other bits.

New goggles for Erick. His old ones always got so many complements but they were just modded goggles from Restoration Hardware and that simply will not do. I am making some from scratch out of leather, brass and wood.

Then I have some sewing projects to do for Erick and lots of clothes to take in for both of us.

I have one month to get all of this done!

Getting things ready for the con I am faced with a daunting problem, I have too many outfits! I need to figure out what all we are doing and when to plan out what to bring. 9 unique outfits are vying for space in my trunk. I really don't think I can wear that much.

Palantír, archaic artifact... and a hat contraption [May. 27th, 2009|07:22 pm]

This archaic artifact, called a Palantír or Seeing Stone, is from Middle Earth was once used as a long distance communication device, now it is kept in a stasis field to keep anyone from dialing in. The guage and knob on the side are for monitoring and adjusting field strength.

Steampunk iPhone case [May. 13th, 2009|02:41 am]
I did not make the wood case, my woodworking skills aren't that good yet. I got it on ebay and cut out the openings for the screen, button, camera and jack. I screwed on all the filigree and the little frame and button assembly. It's 90% usable in the case. You can't access the bottom to charge it or change the volume but you can turn it on, off, take pictures, use the phone, surf the web and anything else you need to do.

Here is a picture of the side so you can see it is only about twice as thick as the iphone itself.

new summer outfit, mourning dress [May. 5th, 2009|11:19 pm]
This started out because I found the jacket, partially done, while cleaning. The outfit just kind of grew from there. It is meant to be a bit lighter weight and more suitable for warm weather than most of my outfits.

The picture is a bit off center, sorry.

WIP [Apr. 30th, 2009|08:53 pm]
Obviously no where near done with taking down current trim, adding more trim, a large frog closure and some decorative but removable metal fiddly bits. The jacket actually comes down in the back like not split tails which I might make to be more like a bustle, possibly detachable so I can just wear the jacket for more everyday without the floof.

photo.jpg

Cotton skirt from Retroscope not here yet but this is designed to also be worn with velveteen pants tucked into knee-high boots. The blouse is very light cotton from H&M, actually long sleeved so I can wear the outfit without the jacket if it is very hot.

Fabrics are cotton velveteen, cotton, denim corset from timeless trends. No overskirt planned as this is meant to be warm weather wear.

Need to design and make a hat.

This and the other summery outfit are DEFINITELY going to Nashville with me in June, along with the 313 dress.

everyday sparkle [Mar. 17th, 2009|02:56 pm]
For my everyday jewelry for years I have worn a silver ankh with some heliotrope on it and a silver bat also with heliotrope. Since I have started making steampunk jewelry my old stuff has seem kind of plain and dull as it's all just silver and modern looking. I wanted something more in the theme of what I have been making lately for everyday stuff too so I made a steampunk ankh pendant.

I will be doing a steamier version of the everyday bat pendant soon.

Bat Goggles MkII [Jan. 9th, 2009|02:21 am]
Look goggles made of brass! ... and leather and stuff.

another )

I pretty much made these from scratch, and a few odd bits, rather than mod existing goggles. It was a gigantic pain in the ass and I never want to do it again. Of course I know a bunch of things I wish I had done differently so it's likely that eventually I will do it again. They are fairly heavy but also comfortable-ish. I realize the lenses are scratched all to hell, but they are actually pretty easy to change out.

heliotrope filigree mask [Jan. 6th, 2009|06:59 am]

This is made entirely out of filigrees which have been screwed and soldered together and then swarovski heliotrope stones and roses added. I made this to go with my formal steampunk jewelry. The eyes are a little too small and a little too close together, but it is still wearable by me.

custom order - cogs and keys [Dec. 30th, 2008|08:51 pm]
I made this for a friend to give as a gift.

I went for versatility and used swarovski and antique jet stones and beads so it will go with any outfit. The little gears on the necklace turn each other with reasonable reliability. The keyhole in the brooch goes all the way through so you can see the fabric it is being worn on underneath. The watch chain is made to clip on a corset in two spots and hang nicely.

Knocked out several things already tonight and I still have several hours before I need to sleep. One thing I finished was the expensive piece for the con. I am not sure how much it will be but it will certainly be the most expensive thing I have there... or have ever tried to sell.

Twilight Rose Set

Heliotrope and Purple Velvet Swarovski crystal with brass and silver roses and layered filigree bolted and soldered together for the most part.

I need to go over my list and do all the things I can get done pretty quickly. I am absolutely dreading doing the rest of the pictures, inventory and tagging everything. I need to make two more pairs of earrings and then I need to do the actual 'work'. heh.

a different hat for every outfit [Oct. 21st, 2008|06:38 am]
I has them.

Ok to be fair the ballgown has a tiara not a hat and I am just wearing my bat goggles on my head for the 40K outfit.

I was just going to wear one hat twice but I started fiddling with some swirly wire, filigree and gears and decided to make one of my top hats permanently match the black/white stripped outfit. I also realized I could squeak out a 6th outfit just with what I already have mixed/matched a bit differently if for some reason I need to... and it would have yet another hat which I already have ready to go.

Anyway, I was going to wear the stripped dress Sunday but I love what I did with the top hat so much I may just wear the stripes Saturday during the day.

The pictures in no way convey how sparklie and shimmery this thing is. I am really disappointed with them, but alas they are the best I could do with the digital. All beads are Swarovski heliotrope crystal and all bead work was done by hand.

updated ballgown render [Aug. 28th, 2008|04:47 pm]

sparklies [Aug. 11th, 2008|03:20 am]
[feeling... | busy]

Finished the necklace and earrings to go with the ball gown. It is meant to be Steampunk formal jewelry. No gears, so what makes it Steampunk? I mixed a Victorian frou frou sort of aesthetic with a practical industrial element to give it 'that' sort of look. In amongst the filigree, swarovski heliotrope stones, bats and roses you can see tiny brass screws poking out. The little screws are helping to hold everything together, they aren't just there for looks. The necklace and earrings are almost entirely soldered, I only used a little bit of epoxy for some of the more tiny bits. Hopefully it will hold up well.

I am making a matching tiara and bracelet... those are not done yet.

Just listed some more stuff in my etsy store.

other stuff I listed )

I spent most of today working on stuff for the shop and our outfits for the weekend. I think I am going to try and make a smaller version of my masterpiece in another stone colour for the shop but it's going to be *really* expensive. Actually most of my stuff I am forcing myself to price higher than I did previously because if I am going to make a serious go of this, I need to get paid and not just cover expenses. The death cameos, for instance, take at least 2 hours of constant work to make.

modern lenses in antique frames, a cautionary tale [Mar. 28th, 2008|03:48 pm]
Over the past few months I have been planning to get new glasses. I couldn't really see out of the very old ones well and I sorely missed the perfectly round glasses with the ear wrapping wires I had from the mid-nineties. I bought a few pair off eBay and chose the ones that fit the best. They aren't as ornate as the ones I had before, which is sad, but I do love these frames and was determined to get a pair of glasses in one and prescription sunglasses in the saftey goggles.

So I got my frames sorted and called Lens Crafters. They said they could put lenses into any frames I brought in, so I made an appointment and went in the next day. Once I had my new prescription, I found out of course that they wouldn't use my frames. They said they were too old and they thought the metal was too weak and I would probably not find anyone willing to take the risk. I took my papers and went elsewhere.

After that experience I figured it would take all afternoon to find someone willing to do this for me. I expected scorn and funny looks, but I was determined!

I walked into the first eye wear boutique on my list and the lady that helped me wasn't sanguine that they could do it. She took my frames and disappeared into the back. A few minutes later she came out with the owner who was nearly bouncing. He told me that they were exquisite, and that he would personally take care of them for me. He loved them and said it was exciting because these are the sort of frames that Jean Paul Gaultier basis some of his designs on.

Today, a week later, I have my new glasses. He went to a lot of trouble to make sure the round lenses were snug in the frames and wouldn't spin around. I am very pleased with them.

Moral of the story, if you want to use antique frames you will probably need to do a little leg work to find the right place to fit them, and it probably won't be cheap either... but it's worth it.
